Question:
Approaching a "help wanted" sign...should I bring a resume? ?

I'm a college student looking for a part time job, and I just saw a "help wanted" sign at a local ice cream shop. I'm interested...but the thing is, I never worked before and I don't know how to approach it.

1.) Do I bring a resume? Or should I just drop in and ask for a manager?
2.) If I ask the manager, what do I tell him/her? Should I ask for an interview or an application?
3.) Is it likely to be hired even if I don't have any working experience?
4.) Do I need to bring contact information of someone I know, so the person hiring can call them?
5.) Do you have any advice? (on clothes, hair, etc. when walking in? Are jeans alright to wear?)
6.) Would the person hiring turn me away before the interview if I look too young? (I'm frequently mistaken for a 12 year old even on college campus...)

I know there are lots of questions, but I hope I can get good answers. If you have any experience getting a job through the "help wanted" sign, please help!

Thank you in advance to all the people who answered my question.

1 .. if your just walking by , just drop in and ask for a manager , be honest just say you don't have any job experience , but your willing to work hard and that you have personal references ( friends ect that say your a good person ) you will probably have to fill out a Application they might review it on the spot .. it happened to me .

2 .. you have to start someplace .. I got hired for my first job with No expedience ..

you can always say you need to fill the Application out at home .. that's fine they wont mind ..

make sure you look nice . not to sloppy , don't have food on your clothing .. but jeans are alright ,, your not going for an office job ..

Be polite and gracious to the manager ..

6 they can't just TURN you away because you look to young .. they have to ask your age and take the Application

I use to call places around my home and just ask .. are you hiring ?? if they said yes i asked if i could come in for a Application and when i filled it out i would ask for the manager to give the application to because i didn't trust some cashier to give it to them ..

i was polite and smiling ..

the manager actually sat me down and interview me on the spot and i got the job .. that happened to me 3 times

Best of luck :)

Lol. I look 16 and I'm 22, sometimes looking younger does have it's benefits. they won't turn you away, some people will ask how old you are anyway.

If you are available to work a lot they are more likely to hire you.

Make up a one page resume and include for references on it (they prob won't call them though). Explain to the person working on the counter that your replying to the help wanted sign. Usually they will say one of several things:

1) I'll just get the manager to talk to you

2) the manager isn't here but a) they will call you, b) come back to see them later or c) leave a resume

3) Ask you to fill in an application or just say 'bring in a resume'. then hand them the resume :)

You could wear jeans and a nice top. But you don't really need to dress up, just look very neat and clean and have your hair pulled back.

Good luck :)

nihonjin ja nai?

anyway,

1. yes, you need a resume.

2. inquire about the application first because an interview would follow if the manager is interested.

3. yes it is, as long as you match the manager's need for manpower.

4. yes, you need it for background checking

5. wear something comfortable yet not too lousy looking.IMO, you should stay away from jeans, unless you are applying for a jeans sales company or something like that.

6. uhm, not really. if you match exactly what they need, they wont.

be confident, don't forget about it.

Interesting Question. Are we talking 'family nude' or adults-only nude'? I ask because the 2nd choice requires a lot less in the way of baggage: shades, cell phone, credit card, and an SPF 25 lotion is really all you need. Have Fun!
